Welcome to Zermatt, the charming mountain village that turns into one of the world's most spectacular winter wonderlands. From Zermatt, the Gornergrat Railway takes you up the Gornergrat ridge - a journey full of panoramic views that feature the Matterhorn peak all throughout.

A winter trip to Gornergrat invites you to enjoy hikes and snow-shoe tours amidst the pristine nature, followed by delightful meals on one of the many sunny terraces. For those seeking more excitement, you shouldn't miss the chance to experience exhilarating sled runs down the highest slopes in the Alps.

Between the Gornergrat and the Riffelberg stations, you will encounter the starting or finishing points for various trails that are safe to experience in winter.

Out of the several hiking options at Gornergrat, we highly suggest taking the tranquil path from Rotenboden to Riffelalp

If you're pressed for time, you can simply indulge in a delightful winter's day on a sunny terrace, and then make your way down through the Swiss pine forest (Arvenwald) to Zermatt from the Riffelalp.

Exploring Gornergrat through hiking is a delight, although, during winter, only a few trails remain accessible. So if you want to take a quieter, more snow-covered route, why not strap on your snowshoes and take a snowshoe tour on Gornergrat?

Choose between two snowshoeing routes on Gornergrat or even combine both tours if you are the sportier type. Worry not about safety, as these tours are constantly monitored and you can keep the path by following the pink poles along the way.

Turn up the Fun on the Sledding Slope

Unlimited fun on the sledding slope from Rotenboden to Riffelberg © Gornergrat Railway

Don't feel like skiing? No problem. The sled run from Rotenboden to Riffelberg is as exhilarating as hitting the slopes. It is the highest in the Alps but also one of the most breathtaking.

When the snow builds up in late December or early January, the slope opens at Rotenboden station and slides down 300 meters to Riffelberg. Once you get at the Riffelberg station, you can take the train up to Rotenboden to enjoy another ride. And to make the most of your day, we recommend getting a Sledding daypass for several rides down the sledding slope.

Our tip: rent a Snooc at the Rotenboden station and experience the latest trend in alpine sledding. A Snooc is a seat fixed onto a short ski, which you can steer with your weight or your legs and it’s great fun for everyone.

Enjoy Spectacular Skiing

The Gornergrat sits right in the heart of Zermatt’s skiing area. When you take the Gornergrat railway you get straight from Zermatt station to the skiing area

The Zermatt ski pass lets you use the Gornergrat Bahn for an unlimited period of time.

Plus, Gornergrat is fun even for non-skiers, with its multiple sunny terraces to sip coffee or have lunch with a panoramic view.

Our tip: The blue and red pistes from Gornergrat to Riffelberg are ideal spots to introduce your kids to the fun of skiing.

Stop by the Igloo Village for a Fondue Treat

On the mountain, spots to refill and recharge are a must, whether you're skiing, snowshoeing or on the winter hiking trail. That's why you should absolutely drop by the Igloo Village, the perfect place to take a break.

It has everything for a refreshing lunchtime stop: beer or mulled wine, delicious fondue, great music and cheerful vibes.

Where can you find the Igloo Village? From Rotenboden station, take the winter hiking trail at the right of the railway line (looking down into the valley) and walk 15 minutes to the location.
